I read about Domino's order tracking system a while back but it really didn't register at the time.  After seeing it in action though I was impressed.

Normally I just close the order window after making an online order but today I was called into the other room so I left it open.  When I came back I found the screen had changed...

The page actually continues to update throughout the process of making the pizza (in a cool Ajax way no less)...

It continues right up until the Pizza is sent out for delivery...

That alone was enough to impress me.  But looking deeper I found something that impressed me even more. Below the big fancy bar was some text that changed along the way.  Here are a few examples...

That is what sets this implementation apart from the rest.  Computers give us process information by design but getting one to relay that information in a personable way is impressive.  This design allows the person making the order to connect in a small way to the people fulfilling the order and in doing so removes a lot of the stigma of online ordering.

It makes the whole thing seem a little less sterile and creates a better experience for doing so.

Online ordering is cheaper than having a person take your order which is why you see every pizza place moving in that direction.  But for the consumer there isn't much advantage and the impersonal nature of the transaction actually detracts.

The above system is an ideal example of a company that found a way to turn automation into a plus for the consumer.  The fact that they did it while also lessening one of the main disadvantages makes this a real winner.
